A Moment With Pastor Fred
Many of us have enjoyed the wonder of Frankenmuth. I like the words of Wally Bronner – “Enjoy Christmas, it’s His birthday.” How should we as believers celebrate the holiday? How can we keep Christ in Christmas? We might criticize the world for ignoring Jesus on this day – but what about those of us who know him? The pressures and pre-occupation of the holiday can often leave our own souls parched and spiritually empty. I think the words of our text a few weeks ago can help, Col 3:1-4.
To keep Christ in Christmas we must be saved. We have seen how the Apostle emphasizes one being “in Christ” in our series. To keep Christ in Christmas we must remember our spiritual privileges. We’ve been raised with Christ. The Christian life is a hidden life. Our very souls have been hidden in the bank of heaven for safe keeping. To keep Christ in Christmas demands we focus on eternal priorities. Keep seeking those things which are from above. Now Paul isn’t commanding us to seek streets of gold or eating celestial fruit – what is above? Things above speak of Christ and his kingdom priorities. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you, Matt 6:33. The things that should attract us – the things that should excite us concern the eternal, not the temporary. Far too often our priorities are earthly – not eternal.
There’s nothing wrong with the blessings associated with Christmas. God has given all things to enjoy. They are however to stay in their place. Let’s keep Christ in Christmas.
