A Moment With Pastor Fred
Ever feel overwhelmed? When one looks around the globe and sees so much darkness and evil it can cause one to lose heart. That’s why when reading in 1 Kings I was so encouraged. Suddenly and without introduction the prophet Elijah appears (1 Ki 17). Israel is in a state of apostasy. Ahab and Jezebel are on the throne. We would feel overwhelmed. And then Elijah arrives. One commentator writes:
“For to see [Elijah] appear [out nowhere] reminds us that we need not despair when we see great movements of evil achieving spectacular success on this earth, for we may be sure that God, in unexpected places, has already secretly prepared His countermovement. God has always His ways of working underground to undermine the stability of evil. God can raise men for His service from nowhere … Therefore, the situation is never hopeless where God is concerned. Whenever evil flourishes, it is always a superficial flourish, for God will be there, ready with His … plans to ensure that His purpose will never fail.”
Doesn’t that put iron in your bones? Doesn’t that cause you to breathe a sigh of relief? Whatever threats arise in our day God’s defense is always ready. The Christian is secure in Jesus, safe in the Father’s hands. We are sealed with the Spirit. The Triune God will not leave or forsake us. The church will prevail. Christ’s kingdom will come. That is his promise. We can rest in that dear friend. May we pray, “Even so come Lord Jesus.”
