A Moment With Pastor Fred
Today we begin a new expository series in Genesis 25-35, the lives of Isaac and Jacob. Once we finish, we’ll have completed a study in the entire book of Genesis – we just didn’t do go thru it chronologically or at the same time. Last year we studied the lives of Abraham and Sarah. In that series we spoke of Isaac’s promised birth, and his marriage to Rebekah, so we won’t repeat that. We’re jumping in with the birth of the twins, Esau and Jacob.
Gal 4:28, Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. We’re entitling this series – “Sons of Promise.” Isaac was the promised son of Abraham and Sarah, Jacob the promised son of Isaac and Rebekah. Jesus was also a Son of promise – as seen throughout the OT. As our Lord spoke to the disciples on the road to Emmaus, the OT points to him. Our study isn’t simply a biographical review of two patriarchs for their lives do show us Christ. We won’t shy away from the moralisms we find in these chapters, but our aim is to preach Christ.
Each week in the bulletin we share the coming week’s text (the Flock Update reminds us of this too). We do that to allow you the opportunity to read it, to prepare your heart for the teaching you will receive Sunday. If my calculations are right, we’ll finish our series in late summer. These two lives are a fascinating kaleidoscopic blend of deviousness and devotion, of folly and faith. We will see God’s providence and evidence of grace as how he kept his promises to these men as he intends to keep his promises made to us as well, as “children of promise.”
