A Moment With Pastor Fred
Do you know one of my dreams for HBC? Wayne Grudem, a favorite theologian of mine shares that vision. He writes, “One day by God’s grace we may have churches full of Christians who can discuss, apply and live the doctrinal teaching of the Bible as readily as they can discuss the details of their own jobs or hobbies – or the fortunes of their favorite sports team or television program … Once this happens … many Christians will find that understanding (and living) the doctrines of Scripture is one of their greatest joys.”
What a blessing this would be! And yet survey after survey of evangelical churches reveal a lack of understanding of basic Bible truths.
Next Sunday in the ABF hour I will begin a new series on basic Bible doctrines. Don’t let the word scare you. Doctrine simply means teaching. Theology is simply the study of God. I love the study of doctrine. Tim Challies wrote, “Theology is not a cold pursuit of facts, but a red-hot pursuit of the living God.” Each lesson will stand alone, so if you miss one you won’t be lost.
Why study doctrine? Chuck Swindoll gives some reasons why: doctrine gives substance to faith; it stabilizes us in affliction; doctrine enables us to hand the Bible accurately; it equips us to confront error; it makes us confident and consistent in our walk with God; doctrine filters out fears and superstitions.
Warren Wiersbe reminds us, “The goal of Bible study isn’t an informed intellect but a changed life.” Come at 9:30 am and grow in your faith.
