A Moment With Pastor Fred
“Just follow your heart.” Ever hear that advice? We hear it all the time. The secret to a fulfilling life is chasing after what your heart wants. Even the Christian community has bought into that counsel. But that is exactly what Eve did in Gen 3. She followed her heart.
Gen 3:6, So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
We can’t follow the rulership of our own desires. Our desires can be great liars. True, not all desires are wrong but at best they need examination. They must always be tested against God’s Word. Even my legitimate desires can quickly morph into an idol. Prov 4:23 NIV, Above all else, guard your heart for everything you do flows from it. Use the following X-ray questions to help you see your heart and its desires.
- Who or what do I desire?
- Who do I please?
- What makes me angry?
- What is my greatest joy? What do I fear?
- What worries me?
- Who or what do I trust?
Such probing questions help reveal our hearts. We must beware of what’s going on in us. Change my heart O God, make it ever true, change my heart O God may I be like you. We need God to fashion our desires after his heart.
