Are you a mutterer?
I’m using the word “mutter” in a different way than we normally do. A few months ago in my devotions I came across Joshua 1:8. “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” I discovered the word “meditate” can be translated “mutter.” Wow!
We’re not just to read our Bibles – we’re to mutter the Bible too. We’re to repeat it to ourselves over and over again. Maybe you’re saying, “Well, that command was to Joshua,” and you’re right. But the command isn’t just for Israel’s Commander-in-Chief but for all Christians. Psalm 1:2, “his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates [mutters it] day and night.” There’s no escape! The law of God (for us today, the completed revelation of God’s Word) should be our delight. The Christian life must be lived out being immersed in the Bible. It should fill us, permeate our life in every nook and cranny. A life pleasing to God isn’t done with mystical experiences or warming feelings or from a new gimmick. It comes from the Scriptures – as we assimilate it, incorporate it … mutter it in daily life.
