A Moment With Pastor Fred
“Morality may keep you out of jail, but it takes the blood of Jesus Christ to keep you out of hell.” Charles Spurgeon
While on vacation I read, “Blinded by Might: Why the Religious Right Cannot Save America.” The book was written by two former Moral Majority leaders, Cal Thomas and Ed Dobson. Both men confessed their error in trying to change America from the top down by-passing a spiritual transformation. After raising millions of dollars for the cause, they admitted nothing fundamentally changed – that America was worse morally at the time they wrote the book – in 2000, than when the Moral Majority was founded in 1980. It was interesting to read how politics is based on the premise of compromise – but our faith is based on no compromise so when you marry the two, it is our faith that is compromised. It was revealing how letter campaigns always had an agenda to elicit fear exposing an “enemy.” Thomas once asked, “Why don’t we ever write positive letters?” Answer: they don’t raise funds. And while the book is 20 years old, I found it relevant for much of what we hear today. Dear friends, God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind.
As believers, we’re all for morality, but morality alone will not solve our greatest problem. The church must be the church – declare the gospel clearly loving the sinner.
