A Moment With Pastor Fred
Billy Graham said, “Don’t leave Jesus in the manger: don’t remember him only on Christmas. Instead, learn to walk with him every day, as you pray and read his Word and ask him to help you.” Excellent advice on his day after Christmas. One of the most important Christian disciplines is reading your Bible on a regular basis. Yet I find many Christians do not have this practice. On the kiosk are various schedules on how you can read the Bible through in 2022. If you have never read the Bible through – I would encourage you to do it.
Sometimes it’s good for us to read large chunks – to see the overall picture. I personally like the one plan where you read a different genre of Scripture every day: Psalms on Sunday, Pentateuch on Monday, etc. Susan used the chronological reading schedule a few years ago and loved it. Sometimes I like to slow down and read smaller sections with more of an additional study. I just finished such a study in 1 Kings. The important thing is we need to read our Bibles on a consistent basis.
As we read don’t leave out the Holy Spirit. Reading the Bible apart from him is a meaningless task. We must pray as we read. We must ask the Spirit to open our eyes which are naturally closed to spiritual truth. We need to always think about Jesus. The Bible points to him.
Maybe reading the Bible through in a year isn’t for you this year. Ok, but what is for you? Ps 119:18, “Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.”
