A Moment With Pastor Fred

John and Brandi Lee will be moving this week to PA. John got a job transfer that will require much less traveling. While this is a good thing for the Lees – we will miss them. What a joy they’ve been jumping right into ministry with both feet. When there was a service project to do – you could count on the Lees to be there offering help.

While the media is preoccupied with the mega church or multi-site churches, it might surprise you the average size of a USA Protestant church is 89 adults. According to the Barna Group, only 2% of churches have over 1000 adults.  I’ve never aspired to pastor a mega church. My gifts and personality are more suited for being a shepherd – not a rancher. With that said, there’s no excuse for passivity or complacency. God wants HBC to grow. It is my prayer we would be all God desires us to be here. That involves you and me. It means we are the church’s ambassadors to the greater Lansing area. When was the last time you invited someone to church? The last time you shared Christ with another?   

Years ago, as a young pastor, I read the excellent book by Kent Hughes, “Liberating Ministry from the Success Syndrome.” Kent reminds us faithfulness is what counts. Our responsibility is to plant and to water. God gives the growth. Success in ministry is not measured by bodies, bucks or buildings. We as a church must strive to be faithful entrusting the results to our loving God. May we rejoice in all that God is and has done for HBC.
