A Moment With Pastor Fred
I often say, “Sunday is the best day of the week” and I mean it. Sure I understand that every day is lived for Christ – one man considers one day more sacred than another; and another man considers everyday alike, Rom 15:5. Sunday is the best for me because it’s on this day we come together for corporate worship and mutual fellowship. My whole week is geared towards Sunday and each Saturday night I’m eager, anxious and excited about being together. I hope you are too.
The Greek word for church means ‘called out ones.’ The church is a people called out of the world unto Christ. Throughout the NT the church is referred to as the Body of Christ. So as a body functions, so must the church in mutual cooperation. We’re also a family, God’s family, born again by the Holy Spirit into a new relationship with God as our Father with those around us as brothers and sisters. One day the church will become the Bride of Christ as we celebrate the Marriage Supper of the Lamb in glory. What a great privilege to be a part of the church – once an outsider now showered with God’s mercy and grace! And it is on the first day of the week we gather together to worship and serve.
One of the church fathers, Justin Martyr, explained it this way – “On the day which is called Sunday, all who live in the cities or in the countryside gather together in one place to hear the Word read and taught, communion celebrated, and prayers offered with thanksgiving.” That’s what makes Sunday special.
