A Moment With Pastor Fred
3/8/19
Susan and her sister Kathy’s dad’s funeral was last Tuesday. I had the privilege of giving the eulogy. As I collected information from Ed’s 4 kids and 11 adult grandkids – it was evident he had a profound impact on them spiritually. One of the things mentioned was his Bible reading. If you got up early you would catch him in the living room reading his Bible. Several mentioned Ed’s favorite verse, 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV, “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
I write these words to encourage each of us to be diligent students of the Word ourselves. It saddens me to think some on Sundays haven’t eaten spiritual food since the previous Sunday. Just as we need physical nourishment so we need spiritual. “Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation,” 1 Pet 2:2. Peter is speaking of all believers, not just new Christians. All of us – young and old must maintain a baby-like eagerness for spiritual food. You and I will never grow spiritually if we don’t spend time regularly in God’s Word. If you don’t have such a time, I encourage you to start. And if you do, don’t quit. Reading the Bible is when God speaks to us. It is his Word, inspired, relevant and powerful. Pray before you read. Ask God to open your eyes to his truth. And then do what it tells you to do. The old kid’s song is right-on, “Read your Bibles, prayer everyday and you will grow, grow, grow.”
