A Moment With Pastor Fred
10/18/19
Are you a doubter? I can be. How often I’ve identified with the desperate father who said to Jesus, “Lord, I believe, help me with my doubts.” Elyse Fitzpatrick helped encourage me through my troubling thoughts and feelings in her excellent book, “Doubt: Trusting God’s Promises.” It’s a 31-day devotional – each chapter (day) consisting of a verse and comments over a page and a half. I love how she offers summaries at the end of each day too. For example on Day 22: “Sometimes doubts spring up because we’ve been waiting an answer for a long time.”
I’ve had the privilege of listening to Elyse speak. She’s a gifted communicator. This is the 2nd book I’ve read by her and she’s a gifted writer too. Elyse is part of the Biblical Counseling Coalition. We have ordered copies of her book which are for sale at the kiosk. Place your money or check (made out to HBC) for $7 in the envelope.
“Doubting is part of our DNA,” she writes. “Face it: we are, all of us, Doubting Thomases.” I loved Elyse’s honesty and transparency – but most of all I loved her handling of God’s Word in relation to this struggle. She provided hope through the Scriptures. I recommend the book – recommend reading it over the 31 days. It will strengthen your soul, warm your heart and encourage you in this walk of faith.
