A Moment With Pastor Fred
In 1829, then Governor Martin Van Buren wrote a letter to President Andrew Jackson about a government plan to build a railroad system. “The canal system of this country is being threatened by the spread of a new form of transportation known as railroads. The federal government must preserve the canals for the following reasons:
- If canal boats are supplemented by the railroads, serious unemployment will result.
- Boat builders will suffer.
- Canal boats are absolutely essential for the defense of the United States.
As you know Mr. President, railroad carriages are pulled at the enormous speed of 15 mph which in addition to endangering life and limb of passengers, roar and snort their way through the countryside, scaring livestock and frightening women and children. The Almighty certainly never intended that people travel at such breakneck speed.”
We laugh. Mr. Van Buren would have a heart attack if he saw how fast we travel today. Nonetheless, his world did change, and it continues to change. Today in the ABF hour and for the next 2 weeks we’re going to talk about change – a new strategic plan will be discussed. Change shouldn’t frighten us. It is so important to be a part of these discussions as we look to the future. We need your feedback. This isn’t “my” plan or “the elders or deacons’ plan,” it is our plan. What does God want us to do in the next four years!? Exciting.
Prov 16:3, Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.
